Dublin duo Firm City have today released their debut single ‘Slew’ and I have to say, it’s pretty tasty.
Firm City, who make their music between Dublin and Berlin, set out to “blend modern elements of electronica, new wave, and dense vocal layering to create a sound that ventures beyond the traditional structures of pop.”
While ‘Slew’ is itself a slick, poised song, it reaches new heights when heard along with the music video. Directed by filmmaker Danyal Fox, the video captures intimacy in isolation and the mundanity of a metropolis.
The song’s title is derived from the old Irish word “slúag” which means ‘host, army, crowd or assembly’, with the song developing from a journal entry in the wake of a burglary. Firm City say ‘Slew’ is a “call-out for protection from the slúag in the aftermath of an unnerving event that occurred as the protagonist slept.”
