Alex Eydt: Guardians Album Review

Genre-hopper Alex Eydt has today released his debut album, Guardians, one of the year’s most diverse records to date.

An art-pop celebration, Guardians fuses everything from folk to hip-hop to dance. Alex has already attracted the ears of Spotify curators, too, with his single “Face Her” having been added to New Music Friday UK.

Unlike most artists, Alex, 25, only recently discovered his musical talents. It was in the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic that he locked himself away and undertook a grueling study of musical history and theory. His lack of formal education has made his output formless – meandering in and out of different genres like it’s nothing.

With influences ranging from Gorillaz to NAS to Justice, Alex has created a truly unique debut album. Guardians is a mesh of conflicting personalities where creativity is not confined to one perspective, making it a record that defies easy categorisation.

On the focus track, “Take Someone”, Alex speaks on going against the status quo: “I see this as more of an art installation than a song, but still very very relevant to Guardians. I wanted to make people jump. This isn’t going to be pleasant to listen to and I hope it taps into something psychological because of that.”

Guardians is a conceptual journey, a musical ceremony that delves into the profound themes of religion, spirituality, and the struggle to maintain sound mental health and doctrine in the modern era.

From the likes of “DeMar_-//-“, a transient trip using old sampling techniques, to “Vision // Voice”, an Elvish chorus, the listener is constantly guessing what bold statement will come next.

In a music industry where formulaic compositions often prevail, Guardians offers a breath of fresh air. It is a kaleidoscope of musical experiences, and with a commitment that promises to redefine the music industry, Alex Eydt has his sights firmly set on leaving an indelible mark on the Irish music scene.
